Avon J. BushongSYRACUSE – Avon J. Bushong, 99, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 1:03 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021, at Goshen Hospital.
He was born on Dec. 27, 1921, in Syracuse, to Joseph R. and Olive M. Geyer Bushong.
He was a lifetime Syracuse area resident and graduated in 1940 from Syracuse High School. He was a World War II Army veteran and an Omaha Beach survivor. He was married on Sept. 30, 1945, in Elkhart, to Mary Ellen Kunkel, who preceded him on Sept. 30, 2015. He retired from the Syracuse post office after 36 years, where he served the last seven years as postmaster and following retirement he served as groundskeeper for Wawasee High School for several years.
He was a 70+ year member of Grace Lutheran Church in Syracuse.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Kay Ridings, of Syracuse; son, Douglas (Liz) Bushong, of Johnson City, Tenn.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Jon (Jenny) Bushong, of Syracuse.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a brother, George Bushong.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Wendy Piano officiating. Burial will take place in the Syracuse Cemetery.
