Aviation Board Sets Sign Guidelines

Posted
The board of aviation commissioners established signage guidelines for hangars and discussed updates on a few of its projects Tuesday.
Engineer Ken Ross updated the board on the land acquisition project. He said the grant application was sent to the Federal Aviation Administration April 2.
He said with this project, there was an additional 11 acres remaining from the 82 acres the board wants to purchase. The board has the option to sell this extra land and the proceeds can be used to fund other Airport Improvement Program eligible projects.  The AIP program provides grants to public agencies.
Airport manager Nick King said he and Ross researched and called almost every airport in the state to help create standard guidelines for signage. He said no airport had specific guidelines and that the decision was always left up to the board.
“Ultimately, the tenant needs to have written consent form the board for the requested sign,” King said.
King said the dimensions for signage is roughly 1 foot tall per story, or 11 feet, of the building. This is measured from the ground to the soffit. The signs may also be 8 feet wide for every 1 foot tall. The board approved the flying club’s 40-foot sign request.
The board also approved the request to purchase terminal window blinds from Huntington House for $4,650. King said these blinds have the effectiveness of three inches of brick when they are closed. He said this would drastically reduce their utility bills in the future.

The board is continuing to work with Warsaw Fiber for more effective Internet access. Mayor Joe Thallemer said his plan is for the whole city to be fiber served by 2016. King said this proposition is expensive up front, but it will be beneficial in the future.
King said it was a good month overall and at the next meeting on July 14, there will be an air show presentation.
