Aviation Board Hears Expansion Update

Posted
During their monthly meeting Tuesday, the Warsaw Board of Aviation Commissioners received an update on the airport expansion and signed a contract for IWM to test storm water.

Ken Ross, the airport engineer from NGC in Indianapolis, updated the board on the status of the airport expansion.

“AEP has finished their second iteration of their conceptual cost design,” Ross said. “The first iteration lowered the lines as low as they could go and the cost was $8 million. In the second iteration they brought the lines up a bit and the cost is $5.2 million. The next iteration will hopefully put us within the $2 million mark.”

The airport expansion is a project where the Warsaw Municipal Airport will increase its runway length by 500 to 1,000 feet and possibly re-route CR 100E. Additionally, the power lines east of CR 100E must be lowered to accommodate the aircraft traffic.

Ross informed the board that there was $20,000 left for design purposes. Ross told AEP to finished their conceptual cost designs and report back with the cost analysis. AEP told Ross that after the conceptual cost design analysis there will be no more designing. The next contract must be to complete the project.

Ross additionally informed the board that there was $28,453 that would be lost since it would not be used. Instead of losing that money, Ross convinced the Federal Aviation Administration to allow the city to use the funds to design the rehabilitation of 595 feet of runway 18 and 595 feet of taxiway B. Ross told the board that there were parts of the runway that were not in good shape and had not been rehabilitated since the 1970s.

The cost of the designs is $40,000 and the airport funds used for this is $3,000.

The board unanimously passed the order allowing NGC to continue with design work on the runways.

Airport manager David Beall informed the board that it was that time of year to look at the contract for storm water testing. The airport has used IWM Consulting Group to test the storm water from the airport. Beall asked the board if they wanted to go that way again or look for a different consulting group to do the work.

Beall told the board that IWM had been used in the past and was by far the cheaper option.

The board unanimously agreed to give the $2,500 contract to IWM Consulting Group.

The next meeting of the Warsaw Board of Aviation Commissioners is Sept. 11 at 5:15 p.m.
