Atty. Gen. Speaks At Lincoln Day DinnerIndiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller spoke Thursday night at the annual Republican Lincoln Day Dinner.
The dinner, attended by approximately 75 Republicans, was at Fusion Restaurant, Warsaw.
Zoeller was elected as the attorney general in the 2008 general election. He previously served as chief deputy attorney general to former Attorney General Steve Carter.
Prior to Zoeller's service in the Indiana attorney general's office, he served as assistant to Vice President Dan Quayle in the White House from 1989 to 1991.
Zoeller spoke about his role as attorney general, what it means to be a Republican, and spoke about Abraham Lincoln's legacy.
"I feel I have inherited a strong office and need to keep up a heightened awareness," Zoeller said.
He said when Carter was in office, he did a good job of raising consumer awareness protection.
Zoeller said, as attorney general, he would like to take a proactive approach in stopping credit fraud rather than trying to go after people after a crime has been committed. He also would like to continue to focus on unclaimed property.
"In this county over the last eight years, there was $558,000 returned in property to its rightful owner," Zoeller said.
Defending the state's criminal justice system also is one of his goals.
He said as Republicans there is a sense of individual responsibility.
Zoeller spoke about Lincoln and the deep respect for liberty and property he had. He said Lincoln practiced property law, and as president realized he had no power over the property owner at the time and that slaves were considered the property of slave owners.
He said when the Civil War broke out, Lincoln took on a new capacity and learned he had additional authority as commander-in-chief.
"It's not enough to do what is expected, but to grow above what is expected and find a way to advance things that are a deeper meaning," Zoeller said.
Also during the dinner, Charlie White, Fishers, announced he is seeking the Secretary of State seat in 2010. Current Secretary of State is Todd Rokita.
