SYRACUSE – Athene Gawthrop, 92, of Leesburg, and formerly of Glen Ellyn, Ill., passed away July 10, 2012, in I.U. Goshen Hospital.
She was born April 24, 1920, in Battle Creek, Mich., to Peter and Grace Pappas Klemos. On Sept. 18, 1948, she married Herbert V. Gawthrop Jr., who preceded her in death.
She worked at the Walter Reed Army hospital in the 1940s as a dental assistant and was a homemaker. She was active in the Kosciusko County Historical Society; was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Lake Wawasee; and a member of Warsaw Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Gawthrop-Appenzeller, Syracuse; a son, Peter Gawthrop, Syracuse; two granddaughters, Mandy Stone, Elkhart, and Sarah Appenzeller-Lancaster, Syracuse; three great-grandsons, Kyle, Colin and Mason; and two sisters, Miriam Nowlin, Leesburg, and Cleo Van Patten, Milford. She also was preceded in death by a son, Victor Gawthrop.
Services will be at 11 a.m. July 21 at All Saints Episcopal Church with Father Larry Biller officiating.
