At The Fair - Teen, junior royalty chosen; official opening set tonight

With wishes for world peace and equality, 14 candidates competed for the title of "Miss Teen Kosciusko" Monday evening. Earlier, 13 girls vied for the title of "Junior Miss Koscuisko," while five boys competed for the "Junior Mister Koscuisko" crown.

Heather Lamb, the 1999 Kosciusko County Fair Queen, was the master of ceremonies as Kosciusko named its new Junior Miss and Mister as well as Miss Teen Kosciusko.

Kaitlyn Tom, 14, of Warsaw, was named Miss Teen Kosciusko in last night's pageant, while sisters Jennifer and Andrea Heyde were the first and second runners-up, respectively. Tom is the daughter of Dave and Paula Bowman and Kip and Pam Tom. Jennifer, 15, and Andrea, 13, are the daughters of Lee and Dianne Heyde of Warsaw.

Eight-year-old Brittany Powell of Syracuse won the title of 1999 Junior Miss Kosciusko in Monday's competition. Powell is the daughter of Christina Monroe and Rick Powell. Sarah Pitt, 10, was the first runner-up in the competition, while Sierra Sims, 9, was the second runner-up. Pitt is the daughter of David and Ami Pitt of Warsaw, while Sims resides in Leesburg with her parents, Tom and Kathie Sims.

The 1999 Junior Mister title be-longs to Tyler Phillips, 11, of Mentone. He is the son of Joe and Sabrina Phillips. Kevin Harris Jr., the 9-year-old son of Kevin and Dawn Harris of Warsaw, was named first runner-up and Michael Caruso was second runner-up. Caruso, 8, is the son of Tony and Darla Caruso of Warsaw.

Tonight, the 4-H and Community Fair officially opens at 5:30 p.m. with the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the fair office.

After the official opening, the Cutie King and Queen Contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Activity Tent, and the Junior Talent Contest, for kids ages 12 and under, at 8 p.m. in the Activity Tent.

The concert in the Grandstand, with T. Graham Brown, Highway 101 and Exile, will be at 7 p.m.

Tonight at the 4-H end of the fairgrounds, the dairy judging contest will be at 7:30 p.m., followed by the dairy showmanship contest, both in the Show Arena.

Tomorrow will be the dairy calf feeder steer show, the horse and pony English and contesting, the sheep show and the rabbit illustrated talk.

Wednesday at the fair is "Kiddies Day," featuring kids' barn tours, games and entertainment; a coin hunt, bike giveaway and a frog-jumping contest; "Ronald McDonald Magic Show"; and a watermelon seed-spitting contest and a pedal tractor pull.

Wednesday night will be the Little Miss and Mr. Contest at 6:30 p.m. and the Senior Talent Contest at 8 p.m., both in the Activity Tent.
