Staff Report-
In celebration of the International Year of Astronomy, the Warsaw Astronomical Society will present a lecture series, a telescope clinic and a public observing night at the "Fall Gathering", an event held at Potawatomi Wildlife Park Saturday.
A public observing night will follow after dark that evening pending clear skies. Call ahead if partly cloudy.
The series, titled Astronomical Observing 101," starts at 11 a.m. Each 20-minute secession will cover a different topic including observing with the unaided eye and using telescopes. A telescope clinic will follow at 1 p.m. for those who are having issues with their equipment, trouble finding objects, or want to gain hints on what to buy.
Plan to return for the evening public observing and discover the universe for yourself. The public is encouraged to bring their scopes if they wish.
Society members will be in attendance to share the night sky through telescopes of all sizes. Objects will include various constellations, and an array of other near and deep sky objects. Society members will be available to help those who have questions about or problems with their equipment, finding objects or are new to the hobby.
During 2009, the world is celebrating the International Year of Astronomy as it commemorates the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of a telescope to study the skies and the publication of Johannes Kepler's Astronomia nova in the 17th century. For more information, call Society Vice President Mike Stephan at 574-498-6550 or visit the Potawatomi Wildlife Park's Web site at www.getintonature.com and click on the "Upcoming Events" tab for a downloadable PDF flyer of the entire Fall Gathering event including the astronomical offerings.
