Whether an artist is a sculptor, painter, carver or photographer, they can submit their work to the First Annual Robbins Juried Art Show. Don Swartzentruber, Warsaw Community High School art teacher, said it’s the first-ever juried art show at the school’s performing arts center. “I’m excited,” he said. “I think it will be a good show. There’s a lot of creativity in the community and a lot of art. This will be an opportunity for a lot of people to see it.” The submitting artist has to be 18 years or older (post high school). The pieces have to be the artists’ original works and not from any kit or modeling set. “It has to be original art, but it can be basket weaving, pottery, painting or any fine art. As long as it’s all original,” said Swartzentruber. An artist may submit two pieces by sending .jpeg photos of their work to Swartzentruber at dswartzentruber@warsaw.k12.in.us Submission deadline is April 5. Former WCHS art teacher Sara Robbins and the Advanced Placement art students will judge the art pieces from the photos submitted and pick the winners. There is no fee to submit for the juried art exhibit, but also no prizes this year. “It’s going to be either you’re in or you’re not,” Swartzentruber said. “It’s a chance to not only feature art in the community, but also for the high school to showcase the performing arts center. It’s also an opportunity for more people to exhibit (at the PAC),” he stated. An artist’s work is featured once a month in the display cases at the PAC. Previous artists who have displayed their work included Ron Mazellan from Fort Wayne and Notre Dame professor Chad Hartwig. “The juried exhibit is a good way to get more people in,” said Swartzentruber. Art students will look at the work, critique it and learn from it, he said. It’s a chance for them to be on the other side of an art exhibit, in the judge’s role. Judging will take place April 8-12. Artists will be notified April 15 if their work is in the exhibit or not. Artists then have until April 22-23 to drop off their work to be shown, with the exhibit starting May 1 for the whole month of May. “It will be open during the Tri Kappa Arts Festival May 16 from 6 to 9 p.m.,” Swartzentruber added.
