Arrest Follows Alleged Beating With Ball Bat

A Warsaw man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly beating another man with a baseball bat in November.

Alfred Walter Paul McDonald, 52, of 602 S. McClellan St., Warsaw, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:41 p.m. Tuesday for battery with a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $3,500.

Court documents filed Dec. 22 list the counts against him as battery while armed with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony; intimidation, a level 6 felony; and battery causing moderate bodily injury, a level 6 felony.

On Oct. 22, McDonald was driving a vehicle while intoxicated and was involved in a traffic accident, according to a probable cause affidavit. There were two passengers in the vehicle with him, a man and a woman. All three told officers afterward that the woman was driving.

A Warsaw Police officer determined all three were lying and McDonald was the actual driver. McDonald was charged with driving while suspended and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Police later learned that McDonald had threatened to hurt the passengers if they didn’t tell police she was driving.

On Nov. 28, Warsaw police interviewed the male passenger, who said McDonald attacked him with a baseball bat on Nov. 7 while he was sleeping in his bed. He said he was struck on the head and other areas of his body. His injuries were treated and documented at the hospital. During the alleged assault, the female passenger and another woman were present, court documents state.

On Dec. 11, police interviewed the female passenger who said that immediately after the accident McDonald threatened to hurt them if they didn’t tell police she was driving during the accident.

She also told police that on Nov. 7 at about 3 a.m., she and the male passenger were home asleep in their bedroom when McDonald entered the bedroom and started beating the man with a baseball bat. McDonald stopped beating the man when the woman’s mother entered the room.

McDonald told the woman she was lucky because she was next, according to court paperwork.

A warrant for McDonald’s arrest was issued through the Kosciusko Superior Court on Dec. 22, with a $10,000 surety bond and $250 cash bond. On Jan. 22, that was reduced to a $2,500 surety bond and a $1,000 cash bond by Superior Court I Judge David Cates at the request of McDonald’s attorney.

Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney J. Brad Voelz objected to the change.
