Area Students Enter History Day Competition In Indy

INDIANAPOLIS - More than 240 students from across Indiana, including five from Kosciusko County, will travel to Indianapolis Saturday to compete in the National History Day in Indiana state competition.
The contest will take place at the University of Indianapolis, 1400 E. Hanna Ave., Indianapolis.Local students scheduled to participate include Edgewood Middle School students Marcus Low, Austen Lyke, Mayra Malagon and Zarick Smith, and Warsaw Community High School student Zack Rooker.
National History Day in Indiana is a year-long program dedicated to enhancing history education in elementary and secondary schools. Students in grades four through 12 explore a historical subject and then use their research to create imaginative exhibits, original performances, media documentaries, Web sites and papers. The 2009 theme is "The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies."
Saturday, the general public is invited to attend both the documentary screenings and performances, which will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Exhibits, papers and Web sites also can be viewed by the public from noon to 1 p.m.
Students participating at the state level of this competition worked their way through one of five district competitions. The district contests were hosted in Indianapolis, Muncie, Nashville, South Bend and Vincennes.
The top two entries from each junior and senior category will be eligible to compete in The Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest June 14-18 at University of Maryland at College Park.
