Thanks to a Reading Is Fundamental grant and the schools’ parent-teacher organizations, Lincoln, Harrison, Claypool and Leesburg elementary students will get to explore “Treasure Island.”
According to Warsaw Community Schools literacy coach Lisa Carpenter, literacy night will be held at each of those four schools Oct. 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The theme is “Treasure Island,” and everyone attending is encouraged to dress up like a pirate.
Carpenter said they were awarded RIF grants to buy books for three distributions for the year. The literacy night is the first of the three distributions.
On Oct. 27, students will rotate from literacy station to literacy station. At the end, they will find their treasure – a free book.
Long John Silvers donated 500 pirate hats for the literacy night, so if a child can’t dress up like a pirate that night, the child will at least have a hat to wear.
Each of the four schools will open their literacy night with a reader’s theater, presented by teachers dressed up as pirates. Students also will get to experience a book walk and other age-appropriate games.
The night is for students in grades kindergarten to sixth grade at each of the schools.
Carpenter said that in order to receive the RIF grant, each school’s PTO had to support the grant by paying a quarter of the cost of the books, which came to about $900-$1,000 per school.
“Thanks to PTO support and the RIF grants, we are able to get the free books,” Carpenter said.
