Time was that when someone was in trouble, the community in which they lived would gather around them and lend whatever assistance they could.
That time is now for Warsaw businessmen Jay Warnacut, Steve Sahagun and Brian Szalai. The trio's businesses at the corner of Market and Lake streets burned in an early morning fire Sept. 27.
But from adversity comes opportunity, and for Warnacut and Sahagun, co-owners of The Butterfly, and Szalai, owner of Warsaw Tool, their tragedy has opened up an opportunity for them and the community to rebuild.
That's why Paula Bowman of Courthouse Coffee, Trish Brown of the Warsaw Community Development Corp., and Carol Huffer of the Kosciusko-Fulton County Builders Association are co-sponsoring a benefit for the two businesses to help them recover from their losses.
Four area bands - "Goldroom," "Babalooeys," "Fanatics" and "Coda" - will perform in a charity concert at the Center Lake Pavilion Nov. 15. Admission will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for 13- to 18-year-olds. Children under 13 are admitted at no charge. There will a 50-50 raffle.
"Trish (Brown) and I were talking about what we could do to help," Bowman said. "No matter how much insurance you have, it never covers everything. Anything can be done if we all work together."
Food and drinks, provided by the Kosciusko-Fulton County Builders Association, will be available for purchase, with those proceeds also going to the two businesses. Downtown restaurants will also be featured in a restaurant tour, with proceeds going to the benefit.
