Arden J. Mendel Sr., 95, died at 6:25 p.m. June 27, 2010, in his residence.

He was born July 29, 1914, in Burket, to Lewis B. and Etta Alexander Mendel. On July 29, 1941, in Valparaiso, he married Elizabeth Wartha, who preceded him in death May 17, 1984.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 14, 1943. He had three battle stars for Southern France, Central Europe and Southern Germany, and also had two Bronze Stars. He was selected to be one of the first 100 soldiers to enter the American sector of Berlin. He was discharged April 20, 1946.

He was a Warsaw resident since his retirement. He was a sales agent for Standard Oil for 34 years for Indiana's Kouts/LaCross District, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126; and American Legion Post 49. He was the Republican chairman for Kouts and Pleasant townships for many years. After retirement he worked on the Mendel farm south of Burket.

Surviving are a son, Arden J. Mendel Jr., Warsaw, and a sister, Ethel Rosbrugh, Winona Lake. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Mendel, who died Nov. 4, 2005; two brothers, Charles Mendel and Wayne Mendel; three sisters; Naomi Hartle, who died Sept. 8, 2009; Wanda Zinn and Mildred Howard.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw, with Father Phillip DeVolter officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Osceola.

Calling is from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church.
