April Fool

Editor, Times-Union:

I'm writing this on April 1, the day our state sales tax increases 16.7 percent from 6 percent to 7 percent.

According to a web article that I just read (http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Taxes/Advice/TheBestAndWorstStatesForTaxes.aspx), this new sales tax rate makes Indiana the second highest in the nation, surpassed only by California at 7.25 percent. Five states have no sales tax - Alaska, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire and Oregon.

I also note that the Indiana gasoline tax is 32 cents per gallon. Add the Federal gasoline tax on top of that and we pay 50.4 cents per gallon tax. Looks like the oil companies aren't the only ones making a big profit on the high price of gasoline.

I think that I will go get drunk. The state tax on beer is only 12 cents a gallon.

Now, if I could run my car on beer rather than gas, I could save a lot of taxes.

Well, April Fool! (I wish!)
