Warsaw firemen move into the west side entrance to extinguish a fire in an apartment building at 316 S. Washington St. this morning. Fire crews received a call about the fire around 7:05 a.m. and had the blaze under control by 7:33 a.m. They left the scene at 8:42 a.m. No injuries were reported in the fire. The occupant, Steve Lucas, was not in the apartment when the fire started. The building, which contains six apartments and is owned by Eddie Hatfield, was evacuated for safety reasons, but the fire did not spread from Lucas' apartment. Smoke seeped into some of the other apartments, but the damage was minimal. The estimated damage from the fire is $20,000 and fire officials believe smoking materials may have cause the fire. The fire remains under investigation. The Winona Lake Fire Department assisted the Warsaw Fire Department at the scene of the blaze. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union
