Another Man Charged with Murder in Syracuse Shootings

Posted
SYRACUSE – Kyle David Dehart, 22, Syracuse, was preliminarily charged Friday with two counts of murder and one count of obstruction of justice for his alleged involvement in a fatal double shooting in February.
Police say Dehart accompanied Brandon T. Woody, 22, Syracuse, and a man named Thomas Hursey in a robbery attempt that ended in the shooting death of Josh Knisley and the shooting of Tara Thornburg Feb. 19. Thornburg later died in hospital.
Woody was soon arrested and charged with the murders. Police charged Dehart with the murders as well since they occurred while he was committing the robbery, according to the affidavit from the Kosciusko County Proesecutor’s Office. He was also charged with obstruction of justice because police say he burned a coat, gloves and shoes worn at the time of the murders.
Warsaw police officers obtained search warrants for the Dehart residence last week, where they found a black bag and utility knife that matched the description given by Hursey in his accounting of the robbery and shootings. They also found a pile of charred clothing and shoes in the backyard.
Kyle Dehart is currently being held in the Kosciusko County Jail without bond.  He was previously arrested on two outstanding Kosciusko County misdemeanor warrants when police found him in a residence near where they apprehended Woody in Mishawaka.
Kyle Dehart’s mother, Joan Dehart, 49, Syracuse, was arrested last week and charged with assisting a criminal after police say she helped Woody flee the night of the murders. Her initial hearing is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
