Annual Shop For Cure JM Is SaturdayGet a jump on your Christmas shopping this Saturday while supporting a good cause.

The eighth annual Christmas Shop for Cure JM is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart School gym, 135 N. Harrison St., Warsaw.

There will be artisan foods and crafts, wine, clothing, pottery, jewelry, bath and body products, a bake sale and raffle baskets. It’s a Christmas shopping event for men and women and has grown over the years to include about 45 vendors. In 2017, Shop For Cure JM raised over $46,000; and about $38,000 in 2018.

There will be a coffee truck this year and lots of new vendors.

The event helps raise money to fund research to cure juvenile myositis, which affects only 2 out of a million children.

The event was started by Kristine Alderfer, whose daughter Katherine was diagnosed with juvenile dermatomyositis, a form of juvenile myositis, almost 10 years ago.

Katherine, a 13-year-old Lakeland Christian Academy seventh-grader, was one of three Northeast Indiana children announced in September as a 2020 Riley Champion. The announcement took place at the Northeast Indiana Riley Luncheon in Fort Wayne. In July, a total of eight Riley patients from throughout the state were selected as 2020 Riley Champions.

Kristine said Katherine is still undergoing treatments for her disease. She still makes the trip to Riley Hospital every four weeks, although she is getting ready to start going every three weks.

“Her disease is currently in a flare and we are trying to get it under control,” Kristine said.

Last week, Katherine was on the field of Lucas Stadium as a Riley Champion and participated in the Riley coin toss at the Indianapolis Colts game. “It was super cool,” said Kristine.
