A wide variety of area residents and businesspeople participated in the 34th Annual Egg Breakfast Wednesday morning at the Shrine Building at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds -Êeveryone from Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins to a group of Red Hatters in their purple dresses and fancy red hats.
The event is cosponsored each year by two long-time local businesses, Creighton Brothers (started in 1925) and Lake City Bank (started in 1872), to recognize the importance of farming in the Warsaw/Kosciusko County area.
Agriculture is one of the largest employers in Kosciusko County and is the basis for the local economy. Many businesses in this area are related to and support the business of farming.
The breakfasts started in 1970 as a cooperative effort between Don Robinson, Lake City Bank president, and Doug Hoffer, Creighton Brothers sales manager and later president. Robinson knew of a similar event in Portland/Jay County and wanted to start a recognition breakfast in Warsaw. The two businesses have hosted the event ever since. Lake City's original idea to make people aware of agriculture continues today.
Ron Truex, president of Creighton Brothers, and Michael Kubacki, president of Lake City Bank, personally greeted each participant as they entered the Shrine Building. It's become a tradition that the presidents of the companies are integrally involved in the event.
Another tradition is the participation of the Indiana State Egg Board, which was started in 1930 when Hobart Creighton served in the state legislature. The board was established to protect consumers and require periodic inspection of eggs. The legislation also required that those who sell eggs apply for a license through the SEB. Creighton Brothers holds the "No. 1" first such license issued in Indiana.
Plans are to continue the annual event and make it a little different and more enjoyable each year. This year's breakfast included live acoustical guitar music in addition to the food and conversation.
