NORTH WEBSTER - Attorney David Cates approached the town council with two items Wednesday night: one for the Wawasee School Corp. and the other regarding a vacation request.
Cates, representing the school corporation, presented a map of the new elementary school site and proposed an annexation petition. There is a 30 percent common boundary with the town. The corporation is the property's sole owner.
Cates said the school is concerned about safety and, in case of emergency, would contact the sheriff's department for aid.
"They know the town police department would respond," Cates said, "but for school safety they want a uniformity of governance, want to be able to call the town."
The board asked Cates to proceed with the petition.
Cates also requested vacation of an unimproved alley between Maybelle Grim's property and her neighbors, Joseph and Sharon Martin, on North Center Street. The 20-foot alley has never been opened.
The Martins have planted a flower garden there and Grim uses that area to access her garage.
Grim, Cates said, wants to sell the property and the question of accessibility to the garage has prevented one sale already.
The board approved the vacation request. Cates will present a formal petition at the next board meeting.
Frank Garro approached the board advising them of his plans to add an addition to his Stanley Street home. The board will forward a favorable recommendation when he appears before the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals with a variance request.
Boy Scout Troop No. 126 leader David Dishman requested permission to hold a turkey shoot at the United Methodist Church on Epworth Road, as the group has done in the past, and to hang a banner announcing the event across Ind. 13. The board approved the request advising him to let the Culver's Hill residents know about the shoot.
Dishman also told the board the Boy Scouts were available for community projects.
Replying to a humorous question by superintendent Marshall Minnick, he said the scouts do not build streets nor do they operate pavers.
Minnick asked the board how they would like to proceed with the remainder of the street funds, mentioning several possible projects.
He said the department is waiting for a Department of Natural Resources permit to dredge the channel on Eckert. A recent rain storm flooded the area 100 feet in each direction.
Park director Terry Pawlicki said the park is officially closed and was well attended this summer with the pavilion in constant use. She said there was less vandalism this year, probably because of the public telephone's removal.
Pawlicki asked that no-parking signs be put up on the westbound lane of South Street at the intersection of Ind. 13 and that another be installed near the corner of Mulberry and Ind. 13.
Town board members are Kay Andrews, Ken Wagoner and Jeff Morgan.
A final budget hearing is set for Monday at 5 p.m., with the October meeting set for Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.f
