An Inmate's Apology

Editor, Times-Union:

This letter is to the community and to the friends and family I hurt or lost during my addiction. I’m sorry . . . It took me coming to jail, losing everything I loved and cared for, and sitting in this cell on lockdown with only my regrets and a Bible to realize what I have done to my life and family.

I’ve shed many tears and many pleas to Jesus, but even He can’t reverse the pain I’ve caused, something that weigs really heavy on my heart. If only I could go back in time and redo everything . . . what I would give.

Addiction has taken my family, my true friends, and all my self-respect. Sometimes, I feel as if it’s too late, but as I pray, something tells me it isn’t. I just want you all to know I never meant to hurt any of you and I never wanted this disease.

It’s me that sheds the tears now, not any of you, and I hope one day, you all can forgive me. If you can’t, as bas as that hurts me, I understand.

Addiction is a disease that takes a lot of work, love, and God to cure. It’s taken until now to finally accept that. And to all the addicts still suffering, I’m praying for you and there is help. Don’t end up with me because there is another way. I’m sorry . . . please forgive me?

Here is a poem my friend wrote. I hope it reaches who it needs to . . .

Drugs have taken over, I’m no longer in control, but If I keep going, you will find me in a hole . . .

Not just any hole, I believe it’s called the grave.

I no longer run my life, I now have become a slave.

Ready to get out and longing to get clean.

Doing the 12 steps trying to figure what they mean

Put my faith in God trying to do what I know is right

I’m no longer in the dark, he has provided me with light.

With the 12 steps and the Bible on my side

I’ll kick this drug habit, on sobriety I’ll ride

Ride it like a horse with my chin held up high

Not listening to the devil, for all he tells is lies

I hope this poem inspired you and brings you a great deal of hope. Please buy a Bible and not another bag of dope.
