American Legion Boys' State Seeks Applicants For June Program

Posted
Once again, The American Legion, Department of Indiana, is presenting the Hoosier Boys' State Program, June 14-21 to be held on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute.Applications for the 2008 program are now being accepted. Male students presently in their junior year at high school should contact their guidance counselors and the Hoosier Boys' State representatives in their local Legion posts for application forms immediately.

Opportunities for approximately $35,000 in scholarships will be available this summer.

Boys' State is an intensive, hands-on program focusing on government and politics: building precincts, designing political parties, electing county party chairmen and state central committees, building and running organizational party conventions, creating lobbying groups, and participating in government in action.

Enrichment breakaways include sessions in student rights, law enforcement, legislation, media-broadcasting, speech, and in addition to the ISU/HBS scholarship ($1,320 total) ISU provides qualified delegates to HBS, ISU sponsors a college fair that includes 20 or more participating colleges and universities.

Competition among delegates is keen. An interest in politics and government is highly recommended, but not a prerequisite.

Having a predilection toward speaking is hugely helpful, but not required. Delegates come from all areas of the state.

Academic savvy, although helpful, is not necessary. An ability to argue logically and persuasively is a premium for success at HBS but so is genuine popularity. Success at HBS is directly proportional to the degree of a delegate's willingness to listen and to learn what the staff has to offer. There is a staff of highly qualified professionals from a variety of backgrounds.
