AKRON – Allen E. Heltzel, 73, rural Akron, died at 2:23 p.m. Oct. 4, 2015, surrounded by his family at his residence after an extended illness. He was born Oct. 3, 1942, in Rochester, to Marvin and Maxine Voreis Heltzel. On Dec. 20, 1963, in Deedsville, he married Karen S. Deeds, who survives in Akron. He was the founder of Heltzel Construction in 1971, as well as being a farmer. Prior to that, he worked for R.R. Donnelly and Sons, Warsaw. He was a 1960 graduate of Akron High School. Then he graduated from Greer Technical Institute of Chicago, Ill. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Rochester and the Land Improvement Contractors of America. He had been a past member of the Akron Lions Club where he had been a past president and enjoyed frying fish. He and his wife wintered for 10 years in Pine Island, Fla., with their motorhome. In addition to other memberships, he was a member of the Family Motor Coach Association in the Hoosier Cruisers Chapter and the American Coach Association in the Great Lakes Chapter. He enjoyed traveling in his motorhome to many events, such as power shows or any other reason to drive on the open road. Also surviving are three sons: Dale (and spouse Kim) Heltzel, Akron; Thomas (and spouse Lynn) Heltzel, Lafayette; Hans (and spouse Mimi) Heltzel, Carmel; six grandchildren: Ethan, Bailey, Victoria, Vanessa, Amanda and Andrew; a sister, Carolyn Smith; a brother, Paul Heltzel; and a companion, Greta, his chocolate toy poodle. He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, Dale and Violetta Deeds. Services wil be at noon Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 West Rochester St., Akron, with the Rev.
