SYRACUSE - Alice V. Long, 92, of Syracuse, died at 6:27 p.m. May 4, 2009, in Goshen General Hospital.

She was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Nappanee, to Walter Earl and Adah Plank Malcolm. On May 6, 1945, in Nappanee, she married Charles A. Long, who died in 1982.

A lifetime Kosciusko and Elkhart county area resident, she graduated from Nappanee High School in 1937, and earned a bachelor's degree from Manchester College, North Manchester. In 1979, she retired from Fairfield Community Schools as a Millersburg Elementary teacher after 16 years of service. She also formerly taught at Jefferson & Stump elementary schools, Elkhart County. She owned and operated Long's Landing and assisted her husband on the family farm for many years, which is a Hoosier Homestead Family Farm. She was a Kosciusko County Farm Bureau Woman of the Year recipient. She was a member of North Webster United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Rebecca Circle, the 45+ Sunday school class and formerly taught Sunday school for 25 years. She was a member of Hi Neighbor Home Economics Club, Syracuse; Lakeland Kiwanis Club, North Webster; Red Hat Ladies Group, North Webster; founding member of the Efficient Homemakers Club, North Webster; past president and member of the Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers, Warsaw; and past board member of the Kosciusko County Farm Bureau, Warsaw.

Surviving are a son, Doug (and spouse Dee) Long, North Webster; five daughters" Suzanne (and spouse Jim) Mendenhall, Ocean View, Hawaii; Carolyn Long, North Webster; Rosalyn Hodge, Denver, Colo.; Darlene (and spouse Chris) Hill, Muncie; and Rebecca (and spouse Steve) Jeffries, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Rink, Millersburg; and three brothers, Robert Malcolm, Elkhart; George (and spouse Kate) Malcolm, Nappanee; and Don Malcolm, Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at North Webster United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Smitley officiating. Burial will be in North Webster Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
