The Kosciusko County Alcoholic Beverage Board approved a license for a satellite store for an award-winning Mitchell-based farm winery June 6. The Carousel Winery store will open at 1005 E. Canal St., Winona Lake, July 13, during the WINE(ona) Hops at the Shops Festival. Winery co-owner Cynthia Wilson said by phone Wednesday that the store will offer 12 to 14 varieties of wine, though Carousel normally offers up to 21 kinds. “There’s nothing on our wine list that hasn’t won an international competition,” she remarked, adding that their summer jewel and watermelon wine should become available by the time the Winona Lake store opens. “We make both of those just once a year, and when they sell out, they’re gone.” Their popular wine slushies also will be available at the shop, she said, and visitors will be able to join their wine club for discounts and events. They also hope to be able to offer cheese and fruit from local restaurants. Wineries are allowed licenses for three satellite shops, and Carousel, which last year was voted among the state’s top 10 wineries by Heartland Trails and which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in August, already has one in Mitchell. Wilson said they were attracted by the small-town atmosphere in Winona Lake and wanted to do something to bring people in to benefit its other businesses. Also during the beverage board meeting, members approved license renewal for four businesses, two with violations. La Troje and Ruby Tuesday in Warsaw were renewed despite violations, while Pizza King in Warsaw and Hammer’s Pub and Grub in Syracuse were renewed with no violations.
