A new beer and wine license was approved for Aldi's grocery Thursday by the Kosciusko County Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
ABC member Kenneth Johnson said he was concerned about the placement of the beer and wine, indicated on a drawing as near the front door of 3701 Commerce Drive in Warsaw.
An Aldi's representative said the cashiers would be able to watch the area better in that location and it wouldn't be right inside the door, but further down, past the candy display.
Johnson and state excise officer Patty Fleck heard from Derrick Avery, who came to assure the board he had no interest in JD's Roadhouse, nor did he work in the bar.
Avery's mother, Joyce, owns JD's Roadhouse and was present because her beer, wine and liquor license and Sunday sales license renewals were on the agenda.
Last year's license renewal was continued for several months because of questions the commission had during an incident involving a minor being served at the business.
Derrick was to have appeared before the board for questioning and did not.
He appeared Thursday to apologize to the commission and to take full responsibility for the Feb. 23, 2002, incident.
The Lil's Anchor Bar beer, wine and liquor and Sunday sales permits were transferred to new owner Jim Conder, 5531 E. CR 1400N, Syracuse, doing business as Con Inc., 101 W. Main St., Syracuse.
