AKRON - After resigning March 1 for personal reasons, Tim Fleck returned to the Akron Police Department Thursday after a special town council meeting.
With the forthcoming resignation of town marshal Paul Rayl, Akron stood to lose its only other officer if Fleck resigned. Ed Haines resigned Feb. 1 to take a position with the Rochester Police Department.
Rayl told the council he had received and accepted the withdrawal of Fleck's resignation letter and recommended that the council reinstate Fleck. Fleck will resume his duties as chief deputy marshal April 16.
The council recommended Fleck's salary, as chief deputy, would be $26,420, which will include insurance and vacation time accrued in 1998.
Rayl will continue as town marshal until sometime in May. Fleck will then be appointed town marshal by the council.
As for the remaining deputy position, Rayl said 12 applicants will come in Saturday for screening tests. Rayl said he hopes the number of applicants will be cut down to four or five for review by Fleck and himself.
