Akron and Mentone elementary schools' fourth- and fifth-graders recently took part in a statewide Young Hoosier Book Award voting program.
The program was created by the Indiana Library Federation to encourage students to read quality literature. In this program, education and library professionals nominate 20 titles annually. Participating students read a minimum of five out of 20 nominated titles.Book titles are provided to each school library by donations of each school's parent support group.
Fifty students from Akron, and 46 students from Mentone achieved this accomplishment, and also became members of each school's reading club. Club members received free shirts, and participated in an ice cream sundae party.
Fifth-grade students Fernanda Jimenez, Akron, and Casey Kromkowski, Mentone, persevered throughout the program to read all 20 nominated titles. They were awarded spring book fair gift certificates in honor of their achievement.
