An Akron man is in serious condition today after a one-car accident early Saturday morning.

Rogelio Arroyo, 24, Akron, initally was listed in critical condition at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. This morning, a hospital spokeswoman said Arroyo's condition has been upgraded to serious.

According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department press release, at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, KCSD officers responded to a critical injury accident at the intersection of Ind. 25 and CR 1300W.

The release indicates that, from evidence at the scene, Arroyo was traveling eastbound in a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass left of center. The vehicle went off the northern edge of the roadway, overcorrected crossing back over the roadway, exited the southern edge of the roadway and then traveled across a ditch, striking a NIPSCO utility pole.

Arroyo was ejected from the vehicle, suffering extensive injury. He was airlifted from the scene by Samaritan air ambulance to Parkview Hospital for treatment.

According to the sheriff's department, alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors to this accident.

Mentone Police, EMS and fire departments; Multi-Township EMS; and Samaritan Air Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
