Akron Library Offers Display Of Pysanky Eggs For Limited TimeAKRON - After seeing pictures of Pysanky Eggs on the internet, Charlotte Strong Gerdeman became interested in the art and thought, “I can do that!”
Gerdeman was born, raised and has lived her entire life in the Akron area. She has been creating Pysanky eggs for almost two years.
She recently was published in a magazine for egg art (“The Art of the Egg Shell,” Issue 41) that is written and published in Blackpool, England, and sold worldwide.
She decorates eggs for all seasons and is willing to create special request eggs.
Pysanky is the art of “writing” on eggs (drained eggshells) with a pin head and hot wax. There are two methods: the wax embossed method, which is the method she uses; and the wax resist method. The wax embossed method leaves the wax on the egg, but in the wax resist method, one puts wax on in a design then dips the egg in dye. This process is repeated many times, changing the dye color between each pattern or design. When the artist is done writing, all the wax is removed over a flame to reveal the multicolored design.
She is the daughter of Merl and Florence Strong and is the second of four siblings. She and her classmates were the first graduating class at Tippecanoe Valley High School.
She met her husband, Charles, in Ohio and transplanted him here to live in the Akron area.
Be sure to stop by the Akron Carnegie Public Library and see her eggs. They are located behind glass in the Genealogy Room on the main level of the library.
They are on display for a limited time only, and are available for purchase.
