Posted

MENTONE - Akron Elementary's $2 million project got the green light Monday by the Tippecanoe Valley Schools Board of Trustees.

The school board voted unanimously to go ahead with the Guaranteed Energy Savings Program, as presented by American Energy Conservation Inc.

The program is a guaranteed facility improvement through the Indiana legislature, according to Steve Nutt, account executive with AECI. It improves the facility and infrastructure of a school, is financed by a third party and is guaranteed to pay for itself with energy and operations savings over 10 years.

The infrastructure improvements approved include a new HVAC system, new lighting, new ceiling tiles, an electrical upgrade, new windows, new restroom fixtures that meet Americans with Disability Act standards, coaxial cable for video, kitchen hood with fire suppression and new exterior speakers and lighting.

The project will cost the corporation approximately $2 million and is expected to be completed by year's end.

In other business, the school board:

• Recognized Akron Pride Council and teacher Julia Teel for being selected as an honor council by the Indiana Association of School Principals.

• Recognized all elementary schools, the middle school and high school for being "accredited without warning" by the North Central Association Commission on Schools.

• Approved the student, faculty and athletics handbooks.

• Approved regular summer school programs.

• Approved summer recreation programs and high school team camps.

• Announced the building trades open house is May 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 5640 W. CR 200S.
