Akron Celebrates Being 'Healthy'

Posted
AKRON - Each student at Akron Elementary School Friday received healthy snacks, water, a book, a jump rope and a kick ball.

The free gifts were part of the Tippecanoe Valley school's celebration of "Healthy Bodies - Healthy Minds - Healthy Kids".

Teachers Kathy Good and Kristen Horrel wrote a grant to Fuel Up To Play 60, which provided money for most of the gift items. Local business also contributed to help remind students of the importance of keeping their bodies healthy by playing and exercising, and feeding their bodies with healthy food and drinks. Students also were reminded that healthy bodies lead to healthy minds, and reading also helps keep the minds healthy.

"We still want to tie this in with literacy, that's why we went with Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds," said Horrell.

Local businesses also contributing included Culligan Water, Rochester; Fulton County REMC; The Winning Edge, Wal-Mart, Rochester; and Viking Foods.

Students were not aware of what was going to happen at the convocation Friday. Before they were told about the healthy gifts, a little skit with "Captain Wellness" was performed for them.More information on the Dairy Council's and NFL's "Fuel Up to Play 60" can be found online at http://www.fueluptoplay60.com/
