After two months of studying nutrition, Warsaw Adult Education English as a Second Language students played health-related games Monday night to wrap the unit up.
WAE, located at the Alternative Learning Center, sponsored a health fair game night for the ESL students. All the games were based upon what was learned throughout the nutrition unit.
According to program coordinator Brenda Utter, the K21 Foundation sponsored the program through a grant given to Kosciusko Literacy Services and WAE.
Wanda Cullison, a local dietitian, trained the WAE staff in January on nutrition so they then could present it to the students. Cullison said some of the topics covered included good and bad fats, eating more fruits and vegetables, and reading labels on food packages.
Director of Alternative Services Tony England said four games were devised for Monday's fun, including Hangman, Pyramid, Jeopardy and Pictionary. Each game lasted 15 minutes, then the students switched rooms. Our Father's House also catered food in that included fruits, vegetables, cheese and grains.
With the games, the students could win play money. The play money, at the end of the night, then was used to purchase health-related items from the "store," such as a fire extinguisher.
Cullison said the goal is to increase the health and wellness of the students, and decrease their time sick off work.
"Also," said England, "they can give to their kids a better understanding of health and wellness."
Money from the K21 Foundation grant helped purchase some of the prizes, the food, as well as the textbooks students used in class for the nutrition unit. Each student will keep their textbook.
