Adam Augustine, Warsaw Make Light Work Of Wawasee

Posted

SYRACUSE - Playing in his final Northern Lakes Conference baseball game, Warsaw senior Adam Augustine saved his best for last.

Warsaw belted host Wawasee 13-1 in five innings Tuesday, and Augustine was a thorn in the Warriors' side from the time the game started.

The southpaw dominated the Warriors on the mound, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out nine. At the plate, he helped his cause with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double, one run scored and three RBIs.

"It helped when No. 18 (Augustine) was doing his thing," Tiger skipper Will Shepherd said. "Auggie didn't let them get real comfortable in the box. He came through for us. He's played a lot of conference games, and he can take some good memories from his last one."

The win ups Warsaw's record to 16-8 overall and 9-3 in the NLC; Wawasee falls to 8-17 and 1-11.

The Tigers wasted no time in setting the tone for the game, scoring five runs in the first and then striking out four of the first six Warrior batters.

Senior center fielder Brooks Stogsdill led the game off with a single. He then scored the first run of the game on a past ball, the first of six Warrior errors. Nine Tiger batters stepped to the plate in the first inning, five of them got hits.

Warsaw finished the afternoon with 12 hits and 11 RBIs.

"We had an awful lot of good at-bats, agressive at-bats," Shepherd said. "Even when we got up 6-0, 9-0, the guys didn't fade like an immature team would. They stayed focused."

Senior Nate Milton and sophomore Ryan DeGeeter were each 2 for 3 at the plate, while Geoff Walmer, William Knepper, Michael Barger, Chris Nycz and Stogsdill had one hit each for Warsaw.

Juniors Jake Zajicek and Scott Beasley had one hit each for the Warriors.

Leading 6-0 after two innings, the Tigers added three runs in the third, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Junior Dustin Sumpter, who walked to lead off the fifth inning, scored Wawasee's lone run on a ground-out RBI by classmate Dan Milligan.

Sumpter, now 0-5, got the loss, going 2 1/3 innings with eight hits and six runs.

The box score appears on page 4B.

Warsaw hosts county rival Tippecanoe Valley today for Senior Night, while Wawasee hosts Whitko Thursday.
