Due to its success, Acapulco Restaurant, formerly Cancun Restaurant, 217 E. Center St., Warsaw, easily received approval for new alcohol permits from the Kosciusko County Alcoholic Beverage Commission Thursday.
Their approved retailer permits included sales of beer; sales of beer, wine and liquor; and Sunday sales. Since the city of Warsaw has a population of less than 20,000, the restaurant has to have an underlying beer permit to get the other two permits.
Excise officer Patty Fleck said there is no carry-out allowed with the permits and she visited the business Thursday before the meeting.
"I was really surprised at the foot traffic you had go through there," she said. All of the foot traffic is good for the downtown, she said.
When the original owners sought an alcohol permit for the business about a year ago, remonstrators said they were concerned about the vehicle traffic the new business would create and that there would not be enough parking spaces. But Fleck said that hasn't been the case.
Gordon Vanator, ABC board member, said he has heard only good things about the business since it's opened.
"Keep up the good work," Fleck said.
The approvals for the permits will be mailed to the state today and they will go before the state commission next week. Once Acapulco gets the permit from the state and posts it, they can begin having alcohol distributors deliver to them.
Requests for new beer and wine and Sunday sales retailer permits for Anchor Bay Marina, EMS B1 Lane, Leesburg, were withdrawn. Fleck said the business did not get zoning approval so they had to withdraw their petition.
Also approved was Gordy's Sub Pub's request to put their beer, wine and liquor retailer permit into escrow for a second year while they make improvements at their business.
Renewals approved without any violations include:
Sportsman's Bar, Syracuse, beer and wine retailer permit.
Wawasee Golf Club, Syracuse, beer and wine and Sunday sales retailer permits.
King's Keg, North Webster, beer, wine and liquor dealer permit.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, Warsaw, beer, wine and liquor retailer permit.
South Shore Golf Club, Syracuse, beer, wine and liquor and Sunday sales retailer permits.
American Legion Post 253, North Webster, beer, wine and liquor and Sunday sales retailer permits.
Hacienda Mexican Restaurant, Warsaw, beer, wine and liquor and Sunday sales retailer permits.
Members of the ABC present Thursday were Vanator and Fleck. Not present were president Darwin Call and Kenneth Johnson. The ABC meets at 1 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month in the county courthouse, Warsaw.
