People can get a sneak peek at the traveling exhibit, abolitionART, at the Warsaw Community Public Library during June. This is the brainchild of a mother-daughter team, Dianna Williams and Christi Ziebarth. AbolitionART is a celebration of freedom through the voice of the visual arts. Sixth-graders of nine local schools tie-dyed material swatches, which were used by Dianna Williams, to design and create the panels of the art-quilt. Every square inch is crafted in an “extreme sampler” array of master-seamstress techniques: trapunto, free-motion, embroidery, thread-sketching, applique, fringing, fraying, beadwork and novel embellishments. This art quilt is the culmination project inspired by hand-dyed swatches of 584 sixth-grade students. Titled “The Ripple Effect”, a ripple can be seen when all 12 panels are displayed side by side. It is a visual analogy of how compassion and helping others can be contagious like the ripples of a stone thrown in a pond, Ziebarth said.
