A Wednesday With Butter Bowls Chock Full Of Leftovers

When I was growing up, Monday or Tuesday night's supper would consist of whatever my mom still had in the refrigerator from previous meals. They were generally stored in bowls that formerly held butter (which we still use at the Grossman homestead by the way), and when combined with other bowls it was a meal that mom could warm up on the stove (because for you young ones, microwaves haven't always existed). Sometimes there are several thoughts running in my head at the same time. None of them are MAJOR deals but combine them all together and you get a “leftover Wednesday.” • If I am Michigan football fan, I am embarrassed that my team couldn't manage to score against Notre Dame two Saturdays ago, but Purdue did – twice – in the first half. • Don't get cocky Boiler backers. You should be shaking your heads wondering what your outfit was doing losing to Central Michigan at home 38-17 two Saturdays ago. Where was the team that we saw at Lucas Oil Stadium Saturday in either of the first two games? • Of all of the Shamrock Series uniforms for Notre Dame, I liked Saturday's the best. The interlocking “ND” logo on the helmets was cool, but I wouldn't want it all the time. • Speaking of uniforms, what in the world was that slogan on the back of the Purdue helmets? On the bottom it said “One Brick Higher” ... one brick higher than what? One brick closer to what? Heck, I would think it's more fitting that Matt Painter's basketball team would wear that on their uniforms. Whatever. • Our dear pal Harry Caray used to say “baseball is a funny game,” but football has now taken over as the funniest game to watch. Seriously, how many of you saw ALL of these happening: Bears rally from 17 down to win at San Francisco, New Orleans to lose at Cleveland or Buffalo to be 2-0? • The fall sports season goes REALLY fast. Girls golf teams are getting ready for their postseasons already (most conference meets were last weekend) and at halftime of Friday's football games the regular season will be half over. • I don't regret much going to a high school that didn't have football, but Friday I was reminded that homecoming at a football school is a pretty neat experience. The parade, the ceremony ... I hope kids enjoy that. • Sometimes it’s the moves you don't make that work out best. Ask the Oakland A's, who made two major trades to bolster their already-AL best team – and in the process have not only lost their lead in the AL West, but are struggling to stay in the playoff picture. Since they made the first trade with the Cubs this summer, they went 7-7 in July, 12-17 in August and 5-8 in September. • To tag along with that last thought, anyone who tells you chemistry doesn't matter is someone to stay away from. Whether your work place is a sports team, an orthopedic company or a small business, if you don't enjoy going to work you won't be as productive. The best bosses/leaders/coaches are the ones who create a positive atmosphere. • Tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Tiger Den, the Warsaw Boys Basketball team is hosting a “Sharp Shooter” contest to raise money for Feed My Starving Children. For $25 you get 25 free throws and 25 three-pointers, and the person with the highest total wins $200. The proceeds go to help the Warsaw Mobile Pack next month at Madison Elementary.
