A Friend's Passing

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I enjoyed the lovely letter Mary Geyer wrote in commemoration of Jerry Gerard. I feel that I have the same warm, affectionate attitude toward Mr. Gerard as Mrs. Geyer.

A few months ago, I met Jerry Gerard for the first time in front of Dig's Diner, and the instant he said "hello," I liked him immensely. He, his lovely wife Diane, and I met several times at Dig's, and indulged in so many nice conversations.

While chatting with Mr. Gerard, I discovered that he loved nostalgia as much as I, and that he was a great historian. We discussed so many events of historical interest that had occurred in and about the county in past years. After our first conversation, I thought, "I am so delighted to meet such likeable, congenial individuals. Now, I've got some new friends I can look forward to seeing now and then in years to come." Then, I was profoundly shocked to pick up the paper not long ago to find that my new friend, Jerry Gerard, has passed on. I never even realized that he was ill, he never complained, therefore, it was a tremendous jolt to me to realize that he had succumbed.

Jerry Gerard was a kind, gracious human being, who possessed a jolly, friendly attitude that everybody took to. Mrs. Gerard is also a fine person to be affiliated with, and, at this time, I wish to offer her my condolences. I'm certain that Mr. and Mrs. Gerard spent many happily married years together, and I know that she misses him greatly.

"God bless you, Mrs. Jerry Gerard!"
