The public is invited to a ceremony Sunday for the unveiling of a 9/11 memorial that has been placed outside Center Lake Pavilion.

A brief ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in front of Center Lake Pavilion at Central Park, Warsaw.

The memorial was purchased by Patten Monument Co. The cost of the memorial is $8,100, according to Ken Locke, 9/11 memorial committee member.Funds were raised for the memorial during an Oct. 17 motorcycle ride when more than $1,500 was raised for the memorial. Funds also were collected throughout the community by the Kosciusko County 9/11 committee.

The memorial was placed Oct. 20 to honor local law, fire and emergency services personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, Locke said.

The memorial has the names engraved of Harold Shepler, Joseph Bauer, Phillip Hochstetler and Jason Beal.

Shepler, a former Warsaw Fire Department firefighter, died in 1930 while responding to a house fire on East Center Street.

Bauer, a former Kosciusko County Sheriff's Dept. chief deputy, died in 1954 on Christmas Eve in a traffic accident.

Hochstetler, a former KCSD detective sergeant, died in 1994 while interviewing a suspect about a burglary.

Beal, a former Indiana State Police Trooper, formerly of Shelbyville, died in 2000 when he was patrolling in southeastern Kosciusko County. He stopped to assist a wrecker operator who was pulling a car out of a ditch. As two men worked along Ind. 14, the driver of a passing vehicle lost control of her car on the icy roadway, striking and killing the trooper.
