91 Deer Taken In Reduction Efforts

Posted
The city's deer reduction efforts ended Dec. 30, 2010, and 91 deer were killed.

The hunt was Sept. 20 to Dec. 30, with hunting taking place on weekdays. There was no hunting on weekends, holidays or when school was not in session.

There were approximately 50 deer killed in 2009, and 63 archers were approved for the hunt.

There were 75 approved archers for the 2010 deer reduction efforts.

In 2010, public zones included Hire Park zone, Kosciusko Community Hospital/Springhill zone, Lakeview Island zone and the former Madison School/Boggs Little League zone.

In 2010, there also were 22 private property zones where archers hunted, including the late addition of Rozella Ford Golf Course.

Jeff Grose, Deer Task Force chairman, said the increase in deer killed in 2010 compared to previous years is attributed to archers hunting on approved private properties.

"I am pleased with the 2010 results, and feel it is a good service to the community and appreciate the help from the mayor, police chief, the deer task force, deer management committee, private property owners and the archers," Grose said.

Grose said the deer management committee will meet this spring to discuss the 2010 reduction efforts.

A proposal will need to be approved by the Deer Task Force and Warsaw City Council this summer if the management committee decides to propose another reduction effort.
