A 9-year-old Claypool girl died Wednesday night in what police believe was an accidental shooting.
Angela N. Wright, of 465 E. CR 600S, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, the girl was shot in the upper chest by her 13-year-old brother.
She is the daughter of Randal and Rebecca Wright.
The boy reportedly was shooting the gun outside earlier in the evening and, at the time it was discharged inside the residence, police said they believe the boy thought the 12-gauge shotgun was unloaded.
"It appears at this time just to be a tragic accident," said Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine. He said the incident remains under investigation.
No adults were at home when the shooting occurred. A 14-year-old sister called 911 at about 9 p.m. to report the incident.
Rovenstine said the mother of the children was at work and the father was out of state.
When officers arrived at the residence, Wright was found on the couch and she reportedly had no pulse. Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd pronounced the child dead at 9:46 p.m.
Also assisting at the scene were personnel from South Central and Multi-Township emergency medical services.
