At about 9:33 a.m. today, Ann Lindquist and her daughter, Natalie, 22 months, set a record for the Warsaw Community Public Library by checking out the 500,000th item.
When told of the benchmark, Ann said she thought she'd checked out more than a million by herself this year. Natalie was just signed up for the Story Time for 2-year-olds sessions on Tuesday mornings.
Circulation department employee Lillian Teeter scanned the item, which was among a group of five books for the Lindquist family to read.
This is the first time in library history that half a million items have been checked out in a single year.
Circulation records indicated 486,319 items were checked out by the end of November. Signs showing circulation numbers were posted throughout December.
This morning the countdown began at 9 a.m., with 15 items needed to reach the record. The count began to decrease at 9:23 a.m., with two items checked out, followed two minutes later with five, one at 9:29 a.m. and five items at 9:31 a.m.
The Lindquists were presented with a maroon canvas bag printed with the WCPL logo.
