WABASH - The Honeywell Center will welcome a weekend of rock when 38 Special takes the stage Aug. 27 followed by a performance by RED Aug. 29.
Tickets are available for both shows.
Lake City Rock WRSW 107.3 FM will welcome 38 Special to the Ford Theater Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m., sponsored by Vohne Liche Kennels.
After more than three decades together, 38 Special is still playing more than 100 shows per year. While most associate the group with its arena-rock '80s pop smashes "Hold on Loosely," "Caught Up in You" and "Rockin' Into the Night," these days the band's harder edge is most noticeable.
When the group went in to record "Drivetrain," released in June by Sanctuary Records, its first full-studio album in years, they sought to capture the live energy of their shows on disc.
"It sounds rude," said vocalist/guitarist Don Barnes, "and it was meant to."
"This album won't get labeled as the pop record of the year," adds frontman Donnie Van Zant with a laugh. "It really personifies what rock and roll is all about."
As for their live shows, Barnes says, "We take the crowd for a ride and try to end up triumphant every night, and since we've had the good fortune to have a lot of hit songs over the years, we just line 'em up and shoot 'em down. By the end of the show, they're completely exhausted along with us."
Opening for 38 Special will be Lorenzo, followed by a 15-minute intermission. Tickets are $19 and $38.
On Aug. 29, 98.9 The Bear will welcome Christian alternative rock band RED to the stage. Their 2006 debut album, "End of Silence", was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album.
The band's sophomore album, "Innocence & Instinct", debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 chart in February, selling 39,000 albums in the first week.
In April they won Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album at the 40th Annual Dove Awards.
The four-member band of Nashville natives has toured with mainstream bands such as Seether, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd and Staind.
Tickets are priced at $19 and $39.
Tickets for both shows may be purchased at the box office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, by calling 260-563-1102, visiting www.honeywellcenter.org or by dialing *tix from your Centennial Wireless phone.
