WINONA LAKE - Drama teams from Edgewood and Lakeview middle schools gave presentations before more than 300 people in Rodeheaver Auditorium Monday in tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.
It was the 16th annual program presented by The Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Inc. in conjunction with Warsaw Community Schools and Grace College and Seminary.
Amanda Wang, a University of Michigan student and Wawasee High School graduate, and Anayeli Juarez, a Grace College student and Warsaw Community High School graduate, were presented with Academic Excellence scholarships and plaques by Warsaw Community Schools assistant superintendent Sandra Hass.
Committee chairman Joseph Banks led the group in singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and "We Shall Overcome." Special music was presented by Corey Southall, who sang one of King's favorite songs, "I Surrender All."
The Rev. Warren Walmer of the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church gave the invocation and the Rev. Chad Burkhart, pastor of Victory Chirstian Center, gave the benediction.
The annual tribute to King was free and open to the public.
Members of the committee board of directors, in addition to Banks, are: Lynn Pulliam, president; Edna Bruner, treasurer; Max Mock, secretary; Grant McGuire, director of funding; and Joy Loshe, director of promotions. Members are Dr. Karen Boling, Burkhart, Avo Burkhart, Robert Condon, Eugenia Fulkerson, Anthony Garza, Maleata Hall, Ron Henry, Dr. Dave McGuire, Patricia Outlaw, Ron Robertson and Aaron Rovenstine.
