A Leesburg man was sentenced to the Indiana Department of Corrections today on charges of child molesting and sexual misconduct with a minor.
Grover V. Layne, 51, Leesburg, appeared in Superior Court One. He was sentenced to 30 years on two counts of child molesting, a class A felony, and tens years for sexual misconduct with a minor, a class B felony by Judge Duane Huffer.
Layne was arrested in February 2012 after admitting to having sexual relations a minor female. Layne was represented by Scott Lennox.
In March, Layne entered a plea agreement of guilty to the charges.
“I was quite hesitant to accept this plea agreement,” Judge Huffer told Layne. “In regards to you, I feel it’s too few years. It doesn’t put her through a public display of what you put her through. I accept the plea to protect her, not for you.”
The State was represented by Prosecutor Daniel Hampton and Tammy Johnson.
In a statement before the court, Hampton told the judge, “This case is quite a bit unique in the severity and the period of time it occurred... It’s truly a travisty of trust.”
When asked by Judge Huffer if he had anything to say, Layne responded, “I just apologize first to God to letting myself be guided by the darkness I guess, and I just want to apologize to everyone that's been hurt by this and just be guided by God from now on.”
Judge Huffer said, “God has always been around and God would not accept that conduct. I pray your first prayer every night from now on is for the victim of your crime."
Layne will serve the sentences concurrently with 432 days jail time credit.
