3 Hurt In 2 Weekend Crashes

Posted

Three people were injured in two weekend accidents and alcohol is believed to be a factor in both cases.

A Saturday accident near Milford left a Syracuse man with multiple fractures, while a New Paris man was airlifted from the scene of the 8:17 p.m. accident to a Fort Wayne hospital.

A Warsaw man is in stable condition with multiple injuries after a 12:48 a.m. Sunday accident in Warsaw. Police are seeking the driver, who fled the scene of that accident.

In the Saturday accident, a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report indicates that a motorcycle driven by Gary Meier, 44, of South Syracuse-Webster Road, Syracuse, was eastbound on CR 1300N when he apparently rear-ended an eastbound pickup driven by Edward Walter, 40, of New Paris.

Walter's pickup then veered into the westbound lane and sideswiped a car driven by Elizabeth J. Garlotte, 53, of Comstock Park, Mich., before leaving the roadway and striking a tree on the property of John Antu, East CR 1300N, Syracuse.

Walter suffered head injuries and was airlifted from the scene to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in fair condition this morning.

Meier was admitted to Goshen General Hospital, where a weekend press release noted he was in stable condition. A current condition was not available from GGH officials today.

Garlotte and two passengers in her car were not injured.

Damage was estimated at $2,500 to $5,000 each to Meier's motorcycle and Garlotte's car; $1,000 to $2,500 to Walter's pickup; and less than $750 to Antu's property.

Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Also assisting at the scene were personnel from Indiana State Police, Milford Fire Department and Milford and North Webster emergency medical services.

In the Sunday accident, David Alan Keough, 38, of North Buffalo Street, Warsaw, suffered four broken toes, a broken foot and hip, swelling to an eye and cuts to his head and arms. He also lost five teeth.

Keough told Warsaw police he allowed Charles Dewayne Jarvis, no age available, of South High Street, Warsaw, to drive his van because Keough was intoxicated and he doesn't drink and drive. However, Jarvis reportedly was intoxicated as well and he struck a parked van near the intersection of Center and Miami streets in Warsaw. The van then continued to travel until it struck a pole and Jarvis reportedly fled the scene on foot, according to Keough and a homeowner who came outside after hearing the first portion of the crash.

City and state police searched the area, but were unable to locate the suspect. He also was not at his last known residence.

Damage was estimated at $5,000 to $10,000 to Keough's van; $2,500 to $5,000 to a van registered to Darrell W. Vetor, West Center Street, Warsaw; and $1,000 to $2,500 to a NIPSCO pole that was broken by the impact.
