Charges of neglect were filed against a Warsaw woman earlier this month after police found her residence to be uninhabitable for humans.
Nicole Rae Pearson, 28, of 3340 Old Colony Road, Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 7:49 p.m. Monday for neglect of a dependent in a situation that endangers the life or health of a child. Preliminary bond was set at $5,250.
Court documents filed July 13 list the charges against her as two counts of neglect of a dependent, a level 6 felony, for knowingly placing a dependent in a situation that endangered the dependent’s life or health.
Warsaw Police Department officer Wayne Wilkie and Det. Paul Heaton went to Pearson’s address on July 6 to serve an arrest warrant on her and Spencer Miller. Officers found her in the front yard of the residence pushing a woman in a wheelchair.
Heaton told Pearson there was a warrant for her arrest. She said she needed to get the woman in the wheelchair inside the house.
Officers arrested Pearson and told her they would get the woman inside the residence. As officers got to the front door, the entrance was blocked with trash and debris and an overwhelming foul odor was coming from the house, according to court documents. The debris blocking the doorway made it impossible to get the woman inside the residence.
Officers saw dog feces on the floor and debris piled everywhere throughout the residence. Officers found a container overflowing with human feces and “it was obvious the residence was unfit for humans to live in,” court documents state.
Six adults and Pearson’s two children were living at the residence.
Because the residence was unsafe for human habitation, Heaton contacted the Department of Child Services, Kosciusko County Health Department and Adult Protective Services.
The children were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for a checkup and the woman in the wheelchair was admitted to KCH.
Child Services removed the children from the home and the health department condemned the residence.
