2020 County Voter Turnout Nearly Mirrors 2016’s NumbersWith 36,159 out of just over 54,500 registered voters turning out Tuesday for the general election, final voter turnout in Kosciusko County was 66.35%.

Kosciusko County Clerk of the Circuit and Superior Courts Ann Torpy, who was unopposed in her race on Election Day, said Tuesday night, “In 2016, in-person voters we had 4,984, and this year, we had 11,816. So, that is quite a bit of a difference on that part.”

On Election Day in 2016, she said the county had 26,000 people vote at the polls. Tuesday, the county had 20,000.

More people voted early this year than 2016, but just a few hundred more people voted this year than in 2016.

In 2016, the county had 54,162 registered voters and 54,976 this year.

“So the percentages are pretty close to each other, I think. I think the turnout is about the same, in general,” Torpy said.

She said the national press helped get people out to vote early.

“They talked a lot about early voting, and a lot of voters called in and asked if we had that available. So I think this year (the voters) took the time to find out that information, so more people took advantage of early voting,” Torpy said, noting that she was the first person to vote early this year, but that’s because she works there.

She reported there were no problems with voting in Kosciusko County.

“Everything went well. Everything went really smooth. We were afraid we were not going to get our paper ballots counted from that, but we had those done before 2 o’clock today, and we started two hours earlier so we finished two hours earlier than we did in the spring. We had about the same number to count. We have a great group of people working from both parties. That helps,” Torpy said.

There are provisional votes left to be counted, but she said there weren’t enough of those to have any impact on Tuesday’s election and they are locked away until they’re ready to be counted.
