2006 Lilly Scholars Announced

Posted

The Kosciusko County Community Foundation recently announced Kosciusko County's 2006 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

This year's Kosciusko County recipients, Lauren Cooper and Kyle Watson, are both from Warsaw Community High School.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides tuition and a fee stipend for four years toward an undergraduate degree at any accredited college or university, public or private, in Indiana.

Kosciusko County Community Foundation recommends two scholarship recipients each year from our county. The selection process used by the Community Foundation is "blind," meaning the selection committee does not have access to the names of applicants or their parents until after recipients already have been chosen. Recipients are selected based on academics, school and work activities, community service, essay responses and letters of reference/recommendation.

Lauren Cooper is the daughter of Shayna and Gary Cooper. She plans to study economics and international relations in college. Academically, she is ranked No. 1 in her class. Lauren is employed part time at Biomet as an intern in the international department. She is the senior class president, editor of the yearbook, a cheerleader and a member of many school clubs including National Honor Society, SADD, Academic Superbowl and Latin Club. She serves as a school mentor. She also has been involved in community service including volunteering with Cardinal Center, student council food and toy drives, and many church youth group service activities.

Kyle Watson is the son of Joyce and Toby Young. He plans to study biochemistry/pre-medicine in college. Academically, he is ranked in the top 4 percent of his class. Kyle has worked at Pizza King for most of the last four years and also is employed at the Kosciusko Community YMCA. Kyle was a charter member of the Key Club and is a member of Spanish Club, National Honor Society and the Academic Team. Kyle's community service activities have included a coat and blanket drive for Our Father's House, volunteering with Special Olympics, tutoring English as a Second Language elementary students and mentoring.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is designed to raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and increase awareness of the potential of Indiana's community foundations to improve the quality of life of the state's residents.
