2 Shot While Asleep In Bed

Posted

Gary Conley, 32, and Patsy Howard, 35, of 356 W. CR 900S, Claypool, were shot in their bed as they slept. A 911 call for help was made by Howard about 3:20 a.m. today.

Conley suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital before being airlifted to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition late this morning.

Howard suffered a single gunshot wound to her lower right leg and was being treated at KCH. Kosciusko County Sheriff Al Rovenstine said Howard will likely be released from the hospital today. Officials at KCH said she was in stable condition.

Rovenstine said Howard was able to leave the residence after the shooting and drive to Conley's brother's house, also a resident of CR 900S, to call for help.

According to a press release from the sheriff's department, it is believed the shooter fired from outside the residence through the bedroom window, striking the victims as they slept. Rovenstine said an unknown caliber handgun was used in the shooting. Although the room in which Conley and Howard were shot was on the ground floor of the residence, the window was above shoulder height and the perpetrator probably couldn't see inside the home as the shooting occurred, according to Rovenstine.

Rovenstine said it didn't appear that anything was used to elevate the shooter to see into home.

Police were interviewing family members and acquaintances this morning in an attempt to determine a motive for the shooting and, hopefully, Rovenstine said, come up with a suspect.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by Indiana State Police, South Central and Multi-Township emergency medical services and Life Line Paramedics.
