SYRACUSE - Two men are in custody after an alleged armed robbery Tuesday afternoon at a Syracuse residence.

Douglas Allen Quinn, 25, no known address, and Adam Michael Eary, 18, of Cromwell, were each charged with robbery while armed, resisting or fleeing law enforcement and possession of marijuana in connection with this incident.

Quinn, who police said is a drifter with no permanent address, also was arrested on five warrants for failure to appear for court in Kosciusko, Elkhart and Noble counties, an Elkhart County warrant for contempt of court and as a criminal assist to another agency. He is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on $41,150. Eary's bond was set at $10,000.

Syracuse Town Marshal Tom Perzanowski said the two men are accused of taking $1,000 from the home of Deb Burkholder, Harrison Street, Syracuse.

Burkholder was reportedly familiar with Eary, to whom she and her husband previously loaned money, Perzanowski said. Eary and Quinn apparently went to Burkholder's house about 1 p.m. Tuesday and, when Burkholder opened the door, both men entered the home.

A shotgun reportedly was used during the alleged robbery, but it is not known whether the weapon was loaded at the time of the incident. The gun was not loaded when police recovered it after apprehending the two suspects several hours later. No shots were fired during the incident.

The investigation led police to residences in the Cromwell/Syracuse area and the two were eventually located at a residence near Backwater Lake. When police arrived at that location, Quinn and Eary reportedly fled on foot into a nearby wooded area. Eary was caught within a couple hundred yards of the North CR 925E residence, while Quinn allegedly ran between one-half and three-quarters of a mile before he was apprehended.

Both men reportedly were in possession of marijuana when they were taken into custody.

During the foot chase, Syracuse Ptl. Scott Hand suffered a thumb injury, for which he is seeking medical attention.

Police believe the two suspects acted alone, but the case remains under investigation. No motive for the robbery has been established, Perzanowski said, and the money allegedly taken was not recovered.

Syracuse Police Department was assisted in the apprehension of the suspects by officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police.
